These work are inspired by my pet dog, a corgi, whom I lived with and feel inspired by every day. I saw many pet dogs are disposed and abused. So these work are made to draw people’s attention that our pet need to be protected and they are our friends. In the work of my corgi, I burn a layer (sometimes two, depending on thickness and smoothness of outcome) of blank white enamel (wet process) onto the plate in a kiln for 1.5 minutes at about 850 C. Once cooled, I will then apply watercolour enamel to contour and paint his features. This process may sometimes take up to two layers. The colour layer will also display semi-lucid brush strokes traces similar to that of water colour or oil portrait, in order to bring out the humanity and genuineness of each piece. This layer will be burnt at 750–800 C for about one minute in the kiln, solidifying the piece into its final appearance.
Apart from our pets, those endangered animals in Australia should also be protected. We should take good care of their living environment. For these endangered animal work, I also used water colour enamel technique to present how vivid they are.
Also, fan is another key character in my work. It originally was used to cover the face of people. It was an accessory to protect people from dust. It had protection function. And after time goes on, it turned out to be a tool and accessory to get cool in hot weather. More importantly, in current society, we need to protect the living environment not just for people but also for those endangered animals. The fan is an eco-friendly tool compared with air conditioning. It could also be a fashion trending. People could used it like a fashion accessory.
