ARTIST STATEMENT
GRAE BURNISHED
My jewellery practise aims to question and investigate the stereotypes and archetypes within today’s society and eventuated in the creation of wearable art as a rebellion against conformity of social norms. Coming originally from a special effects makeup background I expanded my practice and knowledge of special effects materials into a more wearable art and object base context. I enjoy experimenting with traditional jewellery materials, such as silver and gold, and re-purposed materials that are unconventionally seen in jewellery and creating work that is playful and weird. Wearable art signifies a garment, an avant-garde statement of fashion which can be used for self-expression and as a tool to solidify an individual’s identity outside societal norms. This freedom creates conversations and encourages the wearer to express their unique selves.
