ARTIST STATEMENT
SHARN GEARY
This photo of the five Donnelly children has always been a part of my life. It shows my Mum, aunties, and uncle at the Grafton Show in their new outfits made by their Aunt. Dressed to blend in, they reduced the risk of standing out and being separated—a survival method that kept them together. In my work, I replicate the collars and fashion from this 1960s photo, using materials that blend into the background, echoing my family's strategy of blending in for protection.
